What’s happening at Starlight Trust Animal Rescue

Well, it’s been a pretty rotten few months but finally things are starting to look better. Dave’s infections have cleared up and he is scheduled to go back to work on Monday. He is still a bit sore and gets tired easily but he’s getting there πŸ™‚

We’ve actually started to make some of the improvements we had planned. Over the weekend we dismantled the shelving unit which previously held all the small cages. We’ve moved the remaining cages around and created a small seating area in the animal room. This means we have less cages in the room but this is deliberate as it keeps the quantity of animals in there to a more manageable level. When we re-open properly we really want to concentrate on quality over quantity. The seating area is to encourage us to spend more time up in the animal room together and will double as a free range and handling area for the rats.

Anyway, I’m really pleased with what we’ve done so far. There’s more to do – the room needs painting and I need some shelves put up for storage – but already it looks tidier and more spacious up there and the bunnies are delighted by the access to previously forbidden areas! Once it’s done I’ll take some piccies πŸ˜€

The other excitingΒ  news, if you haven’t noticed, is that we have a wonderful new website. Huge thanks to Christine and Peet for all their hard work in not only making it look much better, but in making it so much easier to keep updated and therefore saving me lots of time πŸ˜€

Also, just to mention some animals for once(!), we have 5 new mouse shaped friends. I know, I know, we’re not taking anything in, no exceptions but these girls were welsh mice from a rescue which was closing down and these are lumpy, battered ones who needed a permanent space. I can’t resist the rejects!

Chaz and Moe the rats will be off to their new home tomorrow with the wonderful Sylvia and Harley mouse is going to live with Helen and her girly mice at the weekend. Happily we only have two boys left to neuter now so hopefully we’ll be able to find the money to get them done in the next couple of weeks.

Anyway, that’s it for now. I’ll try to be better with the updates now things are more settled πŸ™‚

Another Dave Update September 27, 2009

Apologies again for the delay in updating

Dave had his op as planned on the 10th. Things went fairly well although a few issues with his blood pressure kept him in CCU longer than planned. Anyway he’s home now thankfully and had his staples removed on the 21st.

Since then he has had some issues with his incision which isn’t healing very well and is infected. So he’s basically banned from moving apart from toilet visits!

Just to add to the fun I’ve now come down with flu. Going to bed and sleeping it off is of course out of the question with Dave needing constant care as well as all the animals to try and deal with.

So I’m really sorry to all those waiting for replies to emails, some of which are now over a month old. My brain simply is not functional at the moment and I can’t concentrate on even simple computer stuff for more thn afew minutes. Hopefully once I shift this virus things will improve.

Dave Update September 5, 2009

Apologies for the lack of updates re things here. I’ve promised so many people I would keep them posted but at the moment I can barely remember the day of the week let alone anything more complicated πŸ˜‰

Anyway, Dave had his pre op assessment on Tuesday 1st and all went well I guess. They gave him a very thorough check over and appeared happy with everything.

We are due at the hospital on Wednesday (9th) at 2pm. He will stay there overnight and then have his op at some point on Thursday (10th). I will try to remember to post on Thursday to let you all know how he is.

Apologies to those who email in the next couple of weeks. I’ve never been famed for my prompt responses but it’s likely to be even worse than usual for a short while. I’m sure you can imagine that we’re rather distracted at the moment and, as of Wednesday, life with consist almost purely of getting up, tending to the animals and then getting to the hospital.

Huge thanks to everyone who has sent messages and offered help, your support really is very much appreciated by us both
